Levante's Win Over Al-Qadsiah Gets Overshadowed by Otávio's Ugly Tackle
Paco Cortés scored the only goal of Levante's 1-0 win over Al-Qadsiah, arriving on the hour mark to give Luis Castro's side their second preseason victory. It should have been the headline. Instead, the conversation belongs to a tackle late in the first half.
Otávio went into a challenge that referee Juan Manuel Gordillo judged worth only a yellow card, not a red, then protested the decision himself. Gordillo held his ground, but rather than risk the game descending into something uglier, he asked Al-Qadsiah's bench to take the midfielder off. Brendan Rodgers' side obliged.
It was the right call in spirit, wrong in principle. Preseason exists to build match sharpness without unnecessary risk, and a referee quietly managing a flashpoint by asking for a substitution is a reasonable way to keep a friendly from boiling over. But it also means the punishment fit the occasion rather than the offense. If the tackle warranted a coach pulling his own player seconds later, it likely warranted more than a caution in the first place.
Levante, for their part, did what they needed to. Cortés's goal capped a spell of good early pressure, and the back line held firm even as Al-Qadsiah pushed for an equalizer after a half-chance from Al-Qahtani that went inches over. That's a genuinely useful data point heading into the season. It's just not the one anyone will remember from this game.
